Diversity of Opportunity

PNLLC maintains an active Diversity Committee which reviews workplace issues including recruitment, training, education and retention.

Careers in Newsroom/Editorial

Beat Reporters, editors, columnists work in tandem to meet daily deadlines. Knowledge of Wire services, on-line technology, database archives, accessing computerized Government records helps reporters gather up-to-the-minute information. A good command of language, economics, political science, history and the humanities is essential. The Associated Press's Stylebook and Libel Manual is preferred reference at the APP to maintain consistency in its reporting style.

Careers in Production

From the pressroom to the composing room, the behind-the-scenes efforts of paginators, pressman, composers, pre-press production technicians and artists results in the "hard copy." These individuals must be ready to respond to last-minute quality control issues, technical dilemmas and challenges that require a skill for quick, intelligent and informed decision-making. Newspaper production also involves disciplines such as electronics, mechanical engineering and computer science.

Careers in Advertising

If you are able to influence people, flexible in nature, have a drive to sell, concern for the customer and crave an exciting challenge, media advertising sales may be the career for you. Time management, customer service skills, general design knowledge, copy writing and editing, communication skills, marketing and media advertising training are all essential skills. The advertising account executive is often the "community link" to the newspaper and must develop excellent listening skills and the ability to work as a team player with production, news and editorial, finance, marketing and circulation.

Careers in Graphic Design and Photography

Positions for graphic designers, artists and photographers are available not only in the newsroom, but also in advertising, circulation and marketing departments. Training in art and design, plus related computer software and product presentations are all required skills. Artists and photographers work closely with the copywriters and marketing department to design special sections, brochures, newsletters, promotional material and much more.

Careers in Circulation

The circulation department is responsible for fullfilling the "four 'P'"s of basic marketing—product, price, place and promotion. Distribution center managers continually develop efficient ways to get the newspaper to homes and point of sale in a timely fashion. Telemarketers secure and maintain a growing home delivery subscriber base. Merchandiser experts learn how to best display their newspaper on the newsstand in face of growing competition.

Careers in Marketing

Members of the marketing department define the newspaper readers and advertisers and what these two "customers" want from the newspaper. This department gets the "message" out, be it through the radio, internet or special circulation promotions. Marketing research, promotion, event and media planning, and production are some of the skills required for this career.

Careers in Finance

Financial managers justify and monitor expenses and revenues, from payroll to advertising, from the cost of ink to projected gains and losses in circulation and how the newspaper can make financial gains. A general overview of the newspaper industry, general business and accounting practices and a knowledge of how a newspaper functions are all essential skills for this career.

Careers in Technology

From the presses to the pagination systems, from the distribution centers to the reporter's PC—everything involves technology. Computer science, engineering, modern printing methods and electronics are all essential areas of knowledge for this field.

Careers in the Internet

Individuals well versed in web design, cybertext techniques and web-related graphic applications are highly sought in the industry. Designing and maintaining on-line versions of newspapers, developing online advertising and websites for businesses; learning how to create new revenue streams and enhance customer service through on-line products are all essential skills required for a career in this field.
